Mary June Kessler and John Parks met at the Henley Floral Company in Hartford City, IN when she issued him his first paycheck there as a new employee. Five years later, after he graduated from Purdue with a Bachelor of Science degree, they were married at the Millgrove Methodist Church on August 13, 1950.
Mary June and John have four children: Cynthia (Delbert) Turner of Van Buren, IN, Sylvia (Keith) Whitesides of West Lafayette, IN, Rodney Parks of Vero Beach, FL, and Jeffrey (Karen) Parks of South Bend, IN. They have 13 grandchildren, and 25 great grandchildren.
In 1954, after 4 years of employment at Henley Floral Co., John entered the ministry as a United Methodist student pastor while he attended Christian Theological Seminary at Indianapolis. He graduated with a Master of Divinity degree and went on to serve United Methodist churches for 40 years at Logansport, Van Buren, Ft. Wayne, South Bend, Markle, and Muncie, Indiana. He also had Interim pastorates from 2000 to 2009 after retirement. Mary June graduated from Montpelier High School and was employed as Secretary at Saint Joseph United Methodist Church in Ft. Wayne, and in the Health Occupations Department of IVY Tech in South Bend.
At present John sends a weekly Scripture Blog to 53 persons in 6 states around the country. He is also the author of two books: “A Walk In The Parks” which is their family history, and “Breeding Better Beagles” which has been widely distributed across the country. He also is a contributing author for Hounds and Hunting magazine.
Mary June and John reside at the Colonial Oaks Retirement Community in Marion, IN. Due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, there will be no anniversary celebration gathering.
