A rare celebration was held and enjoyed at Bridgewater Centre in Hartford City on Monday, June 3, 2019. This celebration was to honor one of Blackford County’s finest ladies who now resides at Bridgewater Rehabilitation Centre. Mrs. Betty Strait was honored by the Order of the Eastern Star organization for 75 years of membership. The 75 year diamond pin was given to Betty by members of the Eastern Star organization.

    Members were Shirley Glessner, past matron, Upland, Bobbie Lancaster, Upland Chapter, Julie Lee, Halway Chapter, Linda Stewart, Worthy Matron, Halfway, Sandy Kirby, Associate Matron, Halfway, and Joy Borders, Secretary, Halfway. Betty’s family and friends were also present for the ceremony.

    Betty was inducted into the organization at the tender age of 18 years old. Now, at 92 years old, she states that her greatest accomplishment in life is probably her years of service in the public. She was 5 years old when she began working in her family’s grocery store, which was Garinger & Groves grocery. When she graduated from the Montpelier Harrison Twp. High School in 1944, Betty became clerk for the school for 21 and a half years. Betty also was secretary for Dr. Burns for 11 years, before retiring and working for Lions Club organization in 1991.

    Betty states, “Bridgewater Centre is my home now and everyone who lives and works here is like my family. I love them all.”
