The Bruins and Wapahani Raid-ers battled it out for 32 minutes, but the Bruins had just a couple more surges to prevail 52-45 to improve to 24-4 on the season and earned a trip to the Regional Final for the first time since ’91. That year, current Wapahani Superintendent Bryan Rausch hit a buzzer-beater to lead Blackford past Kokomo 60-59 in the morning re-gional game. Wapahani played a ball-control offense searching for quality shots and did so early, leading 5-0. The Bruins came back, much in part to 5 3s in the quarter by Cam Elam, Dawson Hundley, Landon Grimes and two by Luke Brown to lead 17-14 after one period. Wapahani grabbed a 22-21 lead early in the second, but the Bruins finished with five straight points, culminating with a Grimes trey to lead 26-22 at the half. Landon Grimes scored 10 in the first half. Luke Brown, closely guarded by two Raiders throughout the game, had eight at the half. Landon Grimes, who lead the Bruins with 23 points before all was said and done, hit a big 3 with 6:00 to go in the third to give the Bruins their biggest cushion of the game to that point, 31-24. Grimes continue his scoring spree and soon put the Bruins up 36-24 with 4:22 to go in the third. Most knew the Raiders were not going to back down and they wasted no time. They quickly cut the lead to 35-29 with 2:25 to play in the third. Luke Brown then drained a 30-plus footer late in third followed by a 25-footer at the buzzer to give the Bruins a 10-point lead heading to the fourth sending Bruin fans into a frenzy. Wapahani chipped away at the Bruin lead. The cut it to 42-37 with 3:00 to play. Though the stress level may have been high in the stands, the Bruins kept their composure and kept their heads when they turned it over to maintain control. The Bruins never let the Raiders get within four and got a big lay-in by Scott Winger to put the Bruins up nine points late. Wapahani hit a 3 to cut the lead to six. Luke Brown hit 1 of 2 free throws with about 12 seconds to play to put the lead at 7. Wapahani threw up a despera-tion three-pointer late that didn’t go and Landon Grimes fired the ensu-ing inbound pass the length of the floor to end the game. Grimes scored his 23 and had a great game on the boards. Luke Brown finished with 17. Cam Elam scored seven points. Dawson Hund-ley scored three points and Scott Winger added two. The big takeaway from this win was the outstanding defense played by the Bruins. The defended very well forcing tough shots by the Raid-ers especially in the second half and did well on the boards with the ex-ception of a couple Raider positions. Defense wins championships. The Bruins are now 14-17 overall against Wapahani. The Raiders had won the prior eight straight games by an average of 22.8 points a game. The Bruins will make their first re-gional finala appearance, as men-tioned above, since ’91. The Bruins have never won a Regional. They also fell just short in ’70, ’72, ’75, ’76 and ’78.
