Monroe Central, ranked #5 in class 1A, hosted the Bruins in week 1 of the IHSAA football season and those in attendance witnessed a good game between two very good football teams. Unfortunately for the Bruins, the Golden Bears were a bit better in defeating the Bruins 37-28.
The Bruins stopped the first Golden Bear drive and quickly drove the field to take a 6-0 after a Dalton Willmann 2 yard run. The PAT was off the mark. Monroe Central wasted no time in taking the lead. A 34 yard pass from sophomore Jackson Ulom to Logan Patterson was the big play of the drive and lead to Monroe Central opening up the passing game to which they had good success against the Bruin secondary. Ulom would eventually connect of 11 of 14 passes for 182 yards. Malcolm Armour later scorerd on a 5 yard run to the Monroe Central up 8-6.
The Bruins bounced back with another impressive drive. Willmann scored on another 2 yard run with Caleb Mealy completing the conversion on a keeper to put the Bruins up 14-8. Again, the Golden Bears responded ultimately scoring on a 17 yard pass from Ulom to armour to put the Golden Bears up 16-14 after the conversion. They would never trail thereafter.
An interception stopped the next drive as Mealy’s pass was picked off in Monroe Central territory. Joel Kennedy would end that drive with a 4 yard run to put the Golden Bears up 22-14 which it would remain until half time.
Ullom hit Luke Jones with a 23 yard touchdown pass early in the third. Ulom ran in the conversion and Monroe Central looked to be putting the game away but the Bruins showed no signs of backing down.
L’trel Schlotter bolted through the Golden Bear defense on his way to a 31 yard touchdown run. After the run failed. The Bruins made a defensive stop and scored again on an Isaac Justice 3 yard run seconds into the fourth quarter. Justice completed the conversion and the Bruins trailed 30-28.
The Bruins came up with another defensive stop as it appeared the momentum had shifting. But the Bruins stalled in just three plays. A poor snap on a punt forced punter Bode Malott to rush his kick that heading a straight 45 degrees out of bounds covering just 3 yards. That sudden shift in momentum lead to a drive from mid-field ending in a Joel Kennedy 1 run with under five minutes to go in the game. Elijah Taylor’s kick was good to make it 37-28 all but ending the game.
The Bruins turned the ball over on downs with just over two minutes to play and the Golden Bears ran the clock out for the win.
The Bruins actually outgained the Golden Bears 340-318. Unlike the Golden Bears, the majority of the Bruins yards came via the ground. The Bruins amassed 276 on the ground. Mealy was 2-8 for 64 yards. Dalton Willmann caught a pass for 17 yards. Liam Gulley caught a pass covering 47 yards before being pulled down behind on a second quarter drive around the 3 yard line.
L’trel Schlotter ran 8 times for 70 yards. Issac Justice carried 13 times for 61 yards. Dalton Willmann carried 6 times for 57 yard. Quinten Teer carried 8 times for 44 yards before being hobbled and limited in the second half. Ethan Miller ran for 15 yards on 5 carries and Mealy finished with 19 yards on 4 carries.
The Bruins will host Southern Wells next Friday at Bruin Field. The Raiders lost their opener to Fremont 27-8. Kick-off is set for 7pm. A reminder that there will be a reception at the new auxiliary gym for those interested in seeing the new facility beginning at 5:30pm.
