IU Health Blackford Volunteers recently donated a visitor’s sleep chair for the IU Health Blackford patient rooms. Thanks to the generous donation of the volunteers, visitors that need to spend the night with a patient now have a chair which pulls out into a comfortable sleeper.
Each year the volunteers ask the hospital Administration what is something that is needed, and this year they requested a sleep chair. Linda Bennett is a retiree from Hartford City and also a 10-year member of the IU Health Blackford Volunteers. Her husband, Dave, has frequently been a patient at IU Health Blackford. She said, “Dave’s been a patient a lot lately, so it’ll be nice to have someplace comfortable to sleep when I stay here with him.”
Dave states, “This is my hometown. My family doctor is here and I’ve always been satisfied with the care I received,” he continues, “The volunteers are hoping to purchase more of these chairs.”
The IU Health Blackford volunteers use proceeds from the hospital gift shop to purchase various items for the hospital. They also hold other fundraisers such as jewelry and purse sales, along with candy, book and flower sales. The group has a Fall Mum Sale scheduled at the hospital for Wednesday, September 4 from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. They are offering 9” mums in yellow, red, white, purple, pink and orange/bronze.
In previous years, the volunteers have purchased bed scales, Pedi-Mates for ambulance cots, a wheelchair for the lobby, stackable chairs, a pad for the radiology cot, a desk chair for Guest Relations, along with making donations to Kate’s Kart and the IU Health Employees Helping Employees fund. They also offer $2000 scholarships to Blackford High Schools students specializing in a healthcare field after high school.
