The junior high girls teams both lost their CIC Tourney games last week.
The eighth girls fell to Elwood 33-27 in their CIC opener to end their season 7-9.
The seventh graders lost to RJ Baskett 40-37 in the CIC Semis to end their season 9-3.
The 8th girls lead 12-8 after one and 18-10 at the half. Elwood chipped the lead to two after three, 22-20. Elwood outscored the Lady Bruins 13-5 in the fourth to fall by six.
Coach Carissa Carter said, “(It was) a very close game tonight, but we unfortunately weren’t able to get the win. Maleah had a job of not letting their top scorer get the ball as much and she did a very good job at defending her.
“We only had six players again tonight and the girls are used to playing with not many subs but that hurt us a little tonight because of foul trouble.
“The girls worked together and have improved immensely since the start of the season.
Unfortunately we weren’t able to get a win to advance in the tournament, but I am very proud of how the girls played tonight and this season.”
Jaelyn Morris scored 14 to lead the Lady Bruins. Adrianna Hall and Kirra Sheveily each scored 4 points. Ryleigh Hiatt scored 3 points and Maleah Limle added 2 points.
The seventh grade girls were neck-and-neck with RJB all night long. The Lady Bruins led 9-8 after one, but trailed 20-19 at the half. RJB lead by two after three, 30-28. RJB outscored the Lady Bruins by a single point in the fourth to fall by three.
Coach Amy Sargent said, “This was a tough loss for the girls. we came out a little too rushed and played into RJB’s hands. Once we slowed down and played our game, we had much better control. I am very proud of all the girls and the way they displayed great sportsmanship and team work tonight. There were times the girls could have gotten caught up in the frustration but they kept their heads in the game and played well.”
Destany Matura had a great game scoring 27 points to lead the Lady Bruins.
Coach Sargent added, “Destany (Matura) played a great game. I was extremely proud of the way Destany handled herself tonight. She was face guarded and double-teamed throughout the game, kept her head in the game and did not let emotions take over. I am looking forward to watching all these girls continue with basketball and what they have in store for the future of Lady Bruins Basketball.”
Also scoring for the Lady Bruins were Jordyn Bailey with 5, Rylee Heiser with 4, and Addison Flores added 1.
A big thanks to Coach Sargent and Coach Carter for steering the girls through a Covid-challenging season with great results. Thanks to the girls for all their efforts. Stick with it. The future looks bright for Lady Bruin Basketball for years to come!
