The Blackford Lady Bruins traveled to Blue River to take on the 7th ranked team in the state in 1A.

The Lady Bruins were the heavy underdog, but that didn’t stop them from giving 100% effort the entire night as they pulled out the upset 43-40.

In the first quarter Blackford led 12-8. Blackford was able to extend the lead with great defense in the second quarter 22-14.

After halftime the Lady Bruins came out a little flat and played not to lose more than playing to win only leading 29-27 after 3.

The Lady Bruins finished the game with a huge 3 to take a one point lead late in the fourth by Olivia Leas. Four clutch great throws down the stretch by Olivia Waters sealed the game for the Lady Bruins.

Coach Waters said, “We had a plan and the girls executed it perfectly! Our goal was keep them in the low 40s and we held them at 40.”

We also wanted to contain #42 Madden,” added Waters. “She had 12 which was almost 7 points under her average. We wanted to control the tempo which I thought we did a solid job of except in the 3rd quarter.

“Let’s face it, when you are a 20 point underdog and you are playing a top 10 team in the state, no matter what division, you know you have your work cut out for you. I couldn’t be more proud of our efforts as a team.”

Coach Waters praised the effort of the whole team. “Everyone played a huge role in this victory and these are the type of games that you hope you are a part of as a coach.

“Now that we have won a couple games we weren’t picked to win, I think that will help our confidence moving forward as we really get into some tough non conference and conference play.”

The Lady Bruins improve to 4-3 this season.
