Parents and students of Blackford County Schools will notice some changes to the school calendar for the 2018-2019 school year.
At the recommendation of Supt. Chad Yencer, Blackford School Board members agreed that the first day of school for students will be pushed back to Aug. 8. This year, students began school on Aug. 14. First days for teachers in 2018 will be Aug. 6 and 7.
Yencer said he was making the recommendations after consulting with staff, teachers and administrators within the school system.
And instead of a two-day fall break, which gave students a four-day weekend, the board agreed to week long fall break, beginning Oct. 8 through Oct. 12. Yencer said those dates would coincide with Muncie Community Schools fall break since some local students attend vocational training in Muncie.
Board members also agreed to reduce spring break from two weeks to one week and one day. Spring break for 2019 will begin on Friday, March 22, with students returning to school on April 1.
Last day of school for students in 2019 will be May 20, and the last day for teachers will be May 21.
However, Yencer said all make up days would be done at the end of the year.
The 2017 school year is expected to end on May 21 for students.
